GEOSYNTHETICS IN EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL

Erosion and sediment run-off impacts both the land itself and the surrounding waterways. Erosion on slopes and waterways can be reduced by establishing vegetation using a range of geosynthetic and biodegradable solutions.

Fully biodegradable mats such as Jute Mat protect the soil and aid the establishment of vegetative cover. Synthetic erosion control fabrics including Grassroots, Enkamat and Macmat R are designed to withstand higher stresses associated with steep slopes and water velocities.

Where there is insufficient soil on the slope to sustain vegetation, Geoweb can be installed, filled in with soil and planted.

As an alternative to non-structural shotcrete to protect slopes from surface erosion caused by weathering, surface run-off and environmental degradation Concrete Canvas can be installed to provide a permanent solution.

Remediation of environmental pollution resulting from sediment run-off is a costly exercise. Sediment management on earthworks sites should include surface protection erosion products and silt control measures such as silt fences, sediment detention/retention ponds, soil cover geotextiles and storm water protection devices to minimise volumes of sediment entering waterways.
